  5. hurled between teams like so many fastballs. Not MIKE SCHMIDT. The
  6. Philadelphia Phillies third baseman played for only one club during
  7. his 17-year career in the National League. The high standards he
  8. faced were his own. Citing "a deterioration of my skills," the No.
  9. 7 all-time home-run hitter and winner of ten Gold Glove awards
  10. retired unexpectedly last week. If his fans were bereaved, so was
  11. Schmidt. Openly crying, he said he refused to hang around just to
  12. add to his statistics: "My respect for the game, my teammates, the
  13. fans, won't allow me to do that." Now, that's one for the record
  14. books.
